Donald Arden Modlin was born December 25, 1920, to Cecil and Lora Modlin and died December 26, 2010, at the V.A. Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 90 years.
He spent his grade school years attending the Limestone Country School near his home. After graduating from Burr Oak High School in 1938, he attended Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas, graduating with a Music Education degree in 1942.
June 20, 1943, Don was married to Mary E Morton and resided in Burr Oak, Kansas.
In August of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving 3 ½ years, 2 ½ years of which were spent in the South Pacific during World War II.
Upon returning home, he was a farmer/stockman, and served as the Noxious Weed Supervisor for Jewell County for 33 years. He served on the Burr Oak School Board for 12 years.
Don was a life-long member of the Burr Oak United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Mike Steven and his wife, Gwen Modlin.
Don is survived by his wife, Mary of 67 years: his children – daughter, Jerry Sue and husband, Jim Harding, of Manhattan, Kansas: son, Don Charles and wife, Lois Modlin of Scott City, Kansas: daughter, Sylvia Diane and husband, Mark Musser of Frontenac, Kansas; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service for Don A. Modlin was held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 30, 2010, at the United Methodist Church, Burr Oak, Kansas, with Pastor Dan Dempsey officiating. Mrs. Rosalee Menhusen, was the organist. Honorary bearers were: Gary Garman, Lynn Scarrow, Jim Rehmert, Carl Stepp, Gail Bartley, Verlin Chitty, Dan Streit, and Gene Underwood. Inurnment was in the Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church, Burr Oak, Kansas, in care of the Melby Mortuary, P O Box 384, Mankato, Kansas 66956.
