Eugene Douglas Proctor, 86 years of age, of Mankato, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014. He was born on February 27, 1928 in Webber to Clarence and Thelma Marie (Knapp) Proctor. Gene graduated from Mankato High School. He then served his country in the United States Army in Korea from 1946 to 1948 receiving the Army of Occupation Medal. Gene was very proud of the fact that his father started the VFW in Mankato. He worked at several different places in town over the years. Gene was a member of the VFW and the Concordia Lutheran Church. He enjoyed sitting on the corner at his house and watching people go by and especially loved helping people.
Gene is survived by his sisters, Betty Hooker of Conroe, Texas, Rosa Lee Gates of Camp Verde, Arizona; sister-in-law, Myrna Proctor of Farmington Hills, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Max A. Proctor; and brothers-in-law, Richard A. Hooker and Wilber B. Gates.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Melby Mortuary Chapel in Mankato with Pastor Dennis Beckmann officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be held from 9 AM to 8 PM with family greeting friends from 6 to 7 PM at Melby Mortuary in Mankato. Memorials are suggested to the Jewell County Hospital in care of the mortuary. Melby Mortuary, PO Box 384, Mankato, KS 66956, is in charge of arrangements.
