George Nelson Greenberg was the fourth child of six children born to Carl (Charles) John and Ida Mae (Scouten) Greenberg, on April 6, 1906, on a farm in Jewell County, Kansas, and passed away at the Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care on January 19, 2007, at the age of 100 years, 9 months, and 12 days.
He attended Custer Grade School and Kackley High School. He attended Vicksburg Baptist Church, where he was baptized at the age of thirteen. After graduation, he taught school in Jewell County for ten years.
On December 21, 1929, he married Grayce Haskins at Concordia, Kansas. To this union three children were born - Phyllis, Sharon, and Marvin.
In June, 1934, he went to work full-time for Hart Grain Company in Randall, Kansas. In the fall of 1934, the company sent him to Selden, Kansas, to manage their grain elevator. He managed it until August, 1974.
In the fall of 1980, they moved to Mankato, Kansas, where they bought a home and united with the Baptist Church. He worked as custodian for Jewell-Mitchell Rural Electric Association until January, 1997.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Grayce in 2001; his parents; stepmother; three brothers, Clarence, Marvin and Chester; two sisters, Mable Haskins and Maude Abram; a half brother, Carl; one half sister, Mary Gray; one stepbrother, Charles Tipton; a stepsister, Mable McCoy; son-in-law, Julius Layher; grandson-in-law, Steve Henriksen; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughters, Phyllis Layher of Worthing, South Dakota, and Sharon Pope of Mankato, Kansas; one son Marvin and wife Louise of Smith Center, Kansas; six grandchildren Robert Layher of St. Charles, Missouri, Barbara Henriksen of Savage Minnesota, Edward Layher of Brandon, South Dakota, Russell Pope of Hoxie, Kansas, Kari Murray of Mankato, Kansas, and Lisa Winter of Lawrence, Kansas; fourteen great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services for George Nelson Greenberg, were held, Monday January 22, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. from the First Baptist Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Neolin Taylor officiating. Music was provided by Jan Thornton, organist, and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle, vocalist. Pall bearers were: Steve Robbins, Alec Robbins, Scott Neilson, Chester Greenberg, Bill Rudolph, and Mike Liggett. Interment was in the Randall Cemetery, Randall, Kansas. The family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, or Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care, both of Mankato. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.
