David Carroll Pettit was born on October 4, 1942, on the farm in Jewell County, Kansas, to Irvin and Ellis (Lentfer) Pettit. David passed away on October 6, 2018, at the age of 76 years, and 2 days.
His first eight years of school were at the Oak Creek School in Harrison Township. Dave graduated from Burr Oak High School in 1960. After graduation, Dave joined his father in family’s farming operation.
He served in the National Guard from 1963 to 1969. After serving he returned to farming. At this time he was blessed with three children – Dawn, Corey, and Michelle. Dave was united in marriage to Virginia (Garman) on October 3, 1987. Virginia’s children joined the family, Bob, Doug, Janet, and Steve.
Dave spent 25 years operating Café’s and an antique store. He was a member of the Cuba American Legion and Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters – Faye Brown, and Phyllis Schutte; brothers- Irvin, Ellis, Paul, and Alan Pettet. He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Kansas City, Missouri; his son, Corey Pettit of Clay Center, Kansas; two daughters, Dawn, and husband, Dan Morley of Belleville, Kansas, and Michelle Kumbera, Granite, Arkansas; step-children, Bob Burns, Doug Burns, Janet Cox, and Steve Burns; four grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; brother, Russell Pettit of Lubbock, Texas; sister Dixie and husband, Ron West of Manhattan, Kansas; brothers-in-law, Bill Brown of Montgomery, Minnesota, and Ray Schutte of Hastings, Nebraska; and sister-in-law, Judy Pettit of Superior, Nebraska; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service was Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Rod Rose officiating. Interment will be at the Schaffer Cemetery, rural Mankato, Kansas, with honors from the Kansas Army National Guard. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 9, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.
