Velma L. (Spurgin) Garman

February 11, 1931 — September 8, 2019

Velma L. (Spurgin) Garman was the youngest of five children born to Orin and Dolly (Slagle) Spurgin.  She was born on February 11, 1931, in Hebron, Nebraska.  Velma passed away on September 8 th , 2019 at the Jewell County Hospital, Mankato, Kansas, of natural causes.

Velma graduated from Republic High School with the class of 1948.  She married Val Jean Garman in 1948.  To this union three children were born-Karen, Keith, and Kay.  They made their home on a farm in rural Republic County, Kansas, until moving to California in 1952.   This is where Velma started her nursing career.

The family moved back to Kansas in 1961.  They owned and operated the Lovewell Marina near Webber, Kansas.

Velma worked at the hospital in Superior, Nebraska, and then at the Jewell County Hospital, Mankato, Kansas.  She worked as an aide and then as Activity Director and Social Worker for the hospital.  Velma worked there for 30 years before retiring.

She was active in Jewell County F.C.E., Montrose Modern Homemakers, and Methodist women’s group.  Velma enjoyed sewing and making quilts.  She really enjoyed having her grandchildren around her.  She never missed a ballgame or a rodeo that the children were involved in.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, husband – Val Jean in 2000, daughter – Kay in 1995, her brothers – Wesley and Glenn, and her sisters – Irene and June.

She is survived by her daughter – Karen and husband – Carl Figgins; son – Keith Garman; 5 grandchildren – Troy, Travis, and Trisha May, Denoya Novovesky, and Jennifer Harris; 2 step-grandchildren – Vinny and Elizabeth Fall; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Celebration of life service for Velma L. Garman will be (was) Friday, September 13, 2019, at 2:00 p.m., at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kansas.  Burial will be (was) in the Pleasant View Cemetery, (rural Montrose) Formoso, Kansas.  Visitation will be Thursday, September 12, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas.  The family suggest memorial be made to Karen Figgins, and will be given to the Jewell County Hospital Activities Department or the Harmony United Methodist Church.

Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.
